In 3C48, the emission in all three bands is dominated
by the unresolved
quasar nucleus; however after point-source subtraction extended emission
can be seen (particularly at 1.6
µm) to the NE and S of the nucleus. These extensions correspond to
those seen in the optical and K-band by Stockton & Ridgway (1991); they
identify the NE source and the nucleus of the galaxy merging with the QSO
host galaxy. (3C48 was not included in Fig. 4 since the ratio image is
severely contaminated by the PSF artifacts at 2 µm).
