NGC 4579. - The bright inner regions of this galaxy appear to define a diffuse bar and Sandage has classified this object as a transition between Sb and SBb. The dust in the inner region does not follow the bar but rather spirals out in a regular two-armed pattern except for the unusual straight lane northeast of the nucleus. The brightest HII regions are found after the "first winding" of the primary dust lanes and are apparently embedded in the dust. The bright arms appear sandwiched between the dust lanes of the galaxy. The interarm "feathers" of dust are clearly seen on the Hubble atlas print.
