NGC 4314. - Two exposures of this galaxy are shown on p. 44 of the Hubble atlas. Sandage's classification is SBa(s)pec for the object; the "pec" is assigned because of the tight spiral structure of the emission regions in the center of the bar. Burbidge and Burbidge (1962) report the presence of emission lines in the central regions only with no evidence of emission elsewhere along the bar. The tight inner spiral is defined quite well by the dust lanes which appear to stretch out along the bar. Dust patches can be detected along the southern half of the bar to a distance of about 1'.
